How averages are calculated
The arithmetic average (mean) is the sum of the numbers divided by how many there are. The median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted. A weighted average multiplies each grade by its weight, adds the results and divides by the total weight, so important assessments count more.
To find the grade needed on the remaining assessment, the calculator solves (current points + needed grade × remaining weight) ÷ (total weight + remaining weight) = target average. Everything runs in your browser.
Average calculator: frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers and divide by how many numbers there are. The average of 6, 8 and 10 is 24 ÷ 3 = 8.
What is the difference between mean and median?
The mean uses every value, so extreme values pull it up or down. The median is the middle value of the sorted list and is less affected by outliers.
How do I calculate a weighted average of grades?
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results and divide by the sum of the weights. With 8 (weight 40) and 6 (weight 60), the average is (8 × 40 + 6 × 60) ÷ 100 = 6.8.
