How to use the online tuner
- Pick your instrument, or leave it on Chromatic to tune any note.
- Press Start and allow microphone access.
- Play one string at a time and let it ring. The big letter is the note the tuner hears.
- Turn the tuning peg until the marker sits in the green centre and the status says in tune. Tap a string to hear its reference tone.
Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this tuner?
It detects pitch with the YIN algorithm and is accurate to within a few cents on a guitar low E (82 Hz). A cent is one hundredth of a semitone, so most people cannot hear a difference under 5 cents.
Is my audio recorded or sent anywhere?
No. The microphone signal is analysed in your browser and discarded straight away. Nothing is stored or uploaded.
Why does the note jump around?
Play one string at a time, let it ring and keep other instruments and background noise quiet. The attack of a plucked string is unstable, so the reading settles a moment after you play.
How do I tune a guitar with this tuner?
Choose Guitar, then tune the strings from the thickest (low E) to the thinnest. The tuner picks the nearest string on its own. Standard tuning is E A D G B E; for Drop D lower the low E to D.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in any modern mobile browser. Allow the microphone when asked, and open the page over HTTPS.
