About hashes and checksums
A hash function turns any text or file into a short fixed-length fingerprint. The same input always gives the same hash and a tiny change gives a completely different one, so hashes are used to verify downloads, detect changes and compare files without opening them.
SHA-256 and SHA-512 are the recommended choices today. MD5 and SHA-1 are broken for security purposes, so use them only to check file integrity against a published checksum. Never use any of these alone to store passwords.
- 1 Type some text or choose / drop a file.
- 2 Read the five hashes, copy the one you need or switch to uppercase.
- 3 Paste a published checksum to check that it matches.
