Complete 5 attempts to record your best

What is a good reaction time?

The average visual reaction time for adults is between 200 and 300 milliseconds. Sleep, fatigue, caffeine, your monitor and even your mouse affect the result, which is why the test averages 5 attempts. Everything is measured in your browser with no data sent anywhere.

  • Under 200 ms: elite reflexes
  • 200–250 ms: above average
  • 250–300 ms: average
  • Over 300 ms: below average

How to take the reaction time test

  1. 1

    Click the blue area

It turns red, which means wait. Keep your finger ready on the mouse button or the screen.

  2. 2

    Wait for green

After a random 1.5 to 5 second delay the area turns green. Click before that and the attempt is discarded and repeated.

  3. 3

Click as fast as you can

The time between green and your click is shown in milliseconds. Click again for the next attempt.

  4. 4

    See your average

After 5 valid attempts you get your average, fastest attempt and rating. Your best average is saved in the browser.

What is the average reaction time?

On visual tests like this one most adults land between 200 and 300 milliseconds. Competitive shooter players often score 150 to 200 ms. Below about 120 ms the click was most likely a lucky guess, because the brain needs at least that long to see the colour and send the command to your finger.

That is why the test averages 5 attempts: a single attempt varies a lot, and the average shows your real reflexes more accurately.

What affects your score

  • Sleep, fatigue and focus: when rested you react tens of milliseconds faster
  • Monitor: 144 Hz and faster screens show the green sooner than 60 Hz screens
  • Mouse or touch: wired mice and fast touch screens add less delay
  • Age: reaction time usually creeps up a little after your mid-twenties
  • Caffeine and warm-up: a few practice rounds improve the score

How to train your reflexes

Take the test in short sessions at different times of day and compare the averages. Rhythm games, ball sports and the test itself help keep attention and hand-eye coordination sharp. Good sleep makes the biggest difference.

Reaction time test FAQ

What is a good reaction time?

Anything under 250 ms is above average. 250 to 300 ms is normal for adults, and under 200 ms is elite, common among competitive gamers.

Why does my result change so much between attempts?

Small changes in attention, anticipation and monitor delay shift each attempt by tens of milliseconds. That is why the final result is the average of 5 attempts.

What happens if I click before green?

You see "Too early!" and that attempt is repeated. Early clicks never count toward the average.

Does the test work on phones?

Yes. Tap the coloured area instead of clicking. Touch screens usually add a little delay, so compare results on the same device.

Does my monitor affect the test?

Yes. A 60 Hz monitor can show the image up to 16 ms later than a 240 Hz one. The difference is small but matters when comparing with other people.
