How Roman numerals work
Roman numerals combine the letters I, V, X, L, C, D and M. Smaller values placed before a larger one are subtracted (IV = 4, IX = 9, XC = 90), otherwise values are added (VI = 6). A symbol is repeated at most three times in a row, which is why the largest standard number is 3999 (MMMCMXCIX). The conversion runs entirely in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
