BMI is a screening estimate for adults aged 18 and over. It does not distinguish muscle from fat and does not apply to children, pregnancy or athletes. It is not medical advice: talk to a health professional about your weight.

How BMI is calculated

BMI (body mass index) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. In pounds and inches the formula is 703 × weight ÷ height². The WHO classifies adult BMI as underweight (below 18.5), normal (18.5 to 24.9), overweight (25 to 29.9) and obesity (30 or more, in three classes).

Your height and weight never leave your browser: the calculation is done on your device.

BMI calculator: frequently asked questions

What is a healthy BMI?

For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered the normal range by the World Health Organization.

Is BMI accurate for athletes?

Not always. BMI does not separate muscle from fat, so very muscular people can have a high BMI without excess body fat.

How do I calculate BMI in pounds and inches?

Multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and divide by your height in inches squared. This calculator does it for you when you choose imperial units.
