Go fullscreen and cycle through the colors: a dot that doesn’t change color is a dead or stuck pixel.
Or start from a color:
Click, tap or Space: next color
Arrow keys ← →: previous / next color
Esc: exit (on phones, tap past the last color)
Works on monitors, laptops, TVs and phones. Clean the screen first: dust looks like a dead pixel.
Click or → for next color · ← previous · Esc to exit
Wipe it with a dry microfiber cloth. Dust and fingerprints look like faulty pixels on a white background.
Click Start fullscreen test. The color fills the whole screen and the hint fades after 2 seconds.
Click or use the arrow keys to change color. Look closely, section by section, on each one.
A dot that is always black, always lit or stuck on one color is a faulty pixel. Press Esc to exit.
A dead pixel stays black on every color because it no longer lights up; it’s easiest to spot on white. A stuck pixel stays lit in one color, usually red, green or blue, and stands out on black. Stuck pixels sometimes recover on their own; dead pixels don’t.
Larger bright patches along the edges of the black screen are backlight bleed, common on LCD and IPS panels. Dark or tinted areas on the gray screen and gradients point to poor uniformity or, on OLED screens, burn-in.
Run the test as soon as a new monitor, laptop, TV or phone arrives, while you can still return it. Many retailers and manufacturers accept returns for pixel defects, but each policy sets how many faulty pixels are tolerated. It’s also worth testing before buying a used device.
The test runs right in the browser with nothing to install. On a phone, open the page, tap Start and tap the screen to change color; after the last color the test closes by itself.
Open the test in fullscreen and cycle through the colors. A dot that stays black on white, or lit on black, is a dead or stuck pixel.
A dead pixel no longer lights up and stays black. A stuck pixel stays lit in one color. Stuck pixels sometimes recover; dead pixels are permanent.
A dead pixel usually can’t be fixed without replacing the panel. A stuck pixel may come back with normal use or with videos that flash colors quickly, but there is no guarantee.
