Number or amount
In words
Why write numbers in words
Checks, receipts, promissory notes and contracts ask for the amount written in words to prevent fraud and doubt. In money mode the tool writes dollars, euros or reais with the cents ("one million dollars", "twenty-one dollars and fifty cents"); in number mode it spells the whole number and reads the decimals digit by digit. It accepts 1,234.56, 1234.56 and 1.234,56, up to 15 integer digits.
The conversion runs in your browser: the numbers you type are never sent or stored.

How numbers are spelled in English
Numbers from 21 to 99 take a hyphen ("twenty-one", "ninety-nine"), hundreds and thousands are written as separate words ("one thousand two hundred thirty-four") and the American style used here leaves out the "and" inside the number. For money, the cents follow the word "and": "one thousand two hundred thirty-four dollars and fifty-six cents". One unit is singular ("one dollar"), everything else, including zero, is plural.
When you need an amount in words
An amount written in words is harder to alter than digits, which is why it is standard in:
- Checks and promissory notes
- Receipts and payment confirmations
- Rental, sale and service contracts
- Powers of attorney, declarations and legal documents
Portuguese and Spanish
The same amount can be written in Portuguese ("mil duzentos e trinta e quatro reais e cinquenta e seis centavos") or Spanish ("mil doscientos treinta y cuatro dólares con cincuenta y seis centavos"). The Portuguese output uses the Brazilian conventions, with "de" before the currency for round millions ("um milhão de reais"), and the Spanish one uses the long scale and apocope ("veintiún mil", "un millón de euros").
